Game Education Summit North America 2011 - Presentation

Intellectual Property Ownership in Education

Principal Attorney

General Session
Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 09:00 - 10:00

In recent years, we've seen a boom in academic programs emphasizing video game development. These programs have become "incubators" for potentially valuable intellectual property. Strictly speaking, this is by no means the first time academia has produced valuable entertainment properties. However, unlike other fine arts programs, "video game education" has in many cases become analogous to the divestiture of student intellectual property rights.

This session will examine:

  • Student ownership in education generally and the game development education space specifically;
  • The reasons for existing policies;
  • The ways in which these policies can be made more transparent and less onerous to the students and academic programs involved.
