Presentation Summary:The session aims to deliver a greater understanding of how specific game features and mechanics can promote or inhibit adult-child interactions and the potential implications on learning game design for children and families.Paper Abstract:Forty years of "Sesame Street" research has consistently demonstrated greater learning benefits when children co–view an educational television program, compared to viewing alone. Could benefits also exist when adult and children use educational games together? The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and the Game Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California are exploring how games can be designed to foster intergenerational play that enhances children’s learning. Their findings are detailed in the report, Can Video Games Promote Intergenerational Play & Literacy Learning. They will present this latest research on adult-child play patterns with both digital and analog games and research-based design principles for creating intergenerational play patterns that help children learn in a variety of scenarios and settings. |
